Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this antebellum plantation has been fully renovated and now offers fun tours led by guides dressed in authentic period costume. Visitors are able to learn about the 19th-century plantation life of everyone from planters to yeoman farmers and slaves, while also checking out the regular events and festivals held here.

Now part of the Charlotte Museum of History, the Hezekiah Alexander Homesite is the oldest dwelling in the country. A humble stone house built in 1774, this is where Hezekiah Alexander and his wife Mary raised their ten children. Nowadays, regular cultural events are held here, while visitors can take tours led by costumed guides.

Just south of Charlotte is the birthplace and childhood home of the country's 11th president, James K. Polk, who was born in 1795. Now a state historic site, visitors are able to take guided tours of the log cabin dwellings, which are replicas of the originals.

Rosedale Plantation is a fully restored Federal-style house. Built back in 1815, its bright yellow trim caused quite a stir in Charlotte at the time. Today, visitors can take in the splendor and elegance of its interior design, which includes original French wallpaper and lovely gardens that are complete with ponds. If you want to go on a guided tour of the property, you will need to book two weeks in advance.
